The Galata Tower

Called Christea Turris (the Tower of Christ in Latin) by the Genoese — is a medieval stone tower in the Galata/Karaköy quarter of Istanbul, Turkey, just to the north of the Golden Horn's junction with the Bosphorus. One of the city's most striking landmarks, it is a high, cone-capped cylinder that dominates the skyline and offers a panoramic vista of Istanbul's historic peninsula and its environs.

Description

The nine-story tower is 66.90 meters tall (62.59 m without the ornament on top, 51.65 m at the observation deck), and was the city's tallest structure when it was built. The elevation at ground level is 35 meters above sea-level. The tower has an external diameter of 16.45 meters at the base, an 8.95 meters diameter inside, and walls that are 3.75 meters thick.

There is a restaurant and café on its upper floors which command a magnificent view of Istanbul and the Bosphorus. Also located on the upper floors is a night club which hosts a Turkish show. There are two operating elevators that carry visitors from the lower level to the upper levels.

Galata Tower Vip Apartment Suites

galata tower vip apartment suites

I've been here for weekend in February. Hotel was chosen for location near galata tower, walking distance to karakoy, galata bridge. My purpose was walk around and have nice food and Ive got it.
Great terrace with galata view!
Minus is lavatory leakage, no window view)) quite expensive 130euro 2 nights

We stayed here for 5 nights, the appartment was very spacious and comfortable however the facilities that were advertised as the washing machine and tv didnt work and the answer we got from the reception was it will be fixed tomorrow however nothing happend ! The shower drain was blocked and they only supplied one set of towels which for 5 days isnt really enough. However location was perfect and very safe easy access to the metro as well as walkable distance to most of the big tourist attractions. The other problem is it was a very long expensive and complicated taxi ride from the airport due to the appartments sign not being clearly visible.

My husband, adult daughter and i stayed in the Galata Tower apartments in September 2013. It was our first time in Istanbul and we enjoyed the place greatly. The area is fascinating, and the apartment was fine. We were on the second floor and a higher flat might have been nicer, but nothing was available. The management was a little hard to find sometimes but extremely accommodating once we located them. We could never get either the safe nor the tv to work, but neither was very important to us. We hope to visit again!

Galata Tower History

Seen from a distance you might think that it’s just a tower, a little tower at that. Located 35 meters above sea level with its nine floors, the tower is 67 metres high. Built in 1348 It was destroyed, rebuilt, restored, decorated with a dome and here it stands a magnificent vantage point across the city and Bosphorus. There are thousands of stories about the tower. The legend goes that a man named Hezarfen Ahmed Çelebi built himself golden eagle wings and sprang from the tower, gliding all the way to Üsküdar on the Asian side of the Bosphorus. According to the legend his brother did the trip in reverse in a rocket filled with gunpowder. Eminent university researchers have tried to demonstrate the
impossibility of these flights but the legend lives on.

Galata Tower Restaurant

You want to enjoy a meal in one of the most unexpected places, the most romantic, the most unusual of all Istanbul? Book your table in therestaurant located in the tower. You will even be served a biscuit in the shape of the tower with your coffee. The view is amazing by day and dazzling by night.

I recommend you to go to the cafeteria, which occupies the top floor of the tower. Coffee prices are not excessive, but the dinner menu, but includes show last thread is for 60 €, as the food and entertainment are 100% designed for the Western tourist, there is not any Turkish except restaurant workers.

The restaurant Galata Tower is the most suitable for those looking for a romantic dinner in the heart of Istanbul. The menu is varied and the view is breathtaking. Advise the menu the chef's specials that are based on typical dishes of Turkish-Ottoman. Try the delicious meatballs stuffed with grated cheese or a stylish Ottoman "Shish Kebap" Turkish specialty. If you make it a point to try this place, be sure to book in advance, because this place is very crowded. Bon Appetite!

Galata Towers

For 13 TL the Galata Tower gives you the best view of Istanbul, across the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn and even Adalar islands. It is open until 8 / 8.30 pm. Do not hesitate to inquire about the time of sunset as this is the best place to watch a wildly romantic view of a city ablaze with colours. The prayers rising in the sunset will bring shivers to your spine and make the evening unforgettable.

We don’t usually recommend stuff that is in every guidebook, but watching Istanbul from Galata Tower is one of most subtle ways of relating to this old and wise city, and this is more than enough to have him in our website. From the top of the tower you can see all seven hills of Istanbul along with every epoch and state of mind that she witnessed. You have Bosporus on one side and Golden Horn on the other and the old city with Topkapı Palace lies in front of you: a 360 degree view of Istanbul. With just a little bit of imagination, you can feel like a tower watchman from as early as the 6th century, looking out for the ships entering into the Bosporus, and setting off all the alarms in case of danger. How we wish İhsan Oktay Anar’s book was translated into English (Atlas of Misty Continents)! But it is available in French and German, so sooner or later, it will be translated into English, no worries.Galata Tower is visible from almost every corner of Istanbul, and you can see an amazing Istanbul view from this tower. It is a historical monument indeed, built in the 6th century as a lighthouse by Byzantines, when Ottomans conquered Istanbul it was used as a dungeon, then in the 16th century it was a fire tower, and after a serious fire incident, Genoese rebuilt the tower in stone and give the tower its final shape etc. etc.

How to get there : The easiest way is to get off the tram Karaköy (blue line) and walk along the streets and stairs, follow the crowd and you will get there.
